Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton squashed a Jason Derulo goal-bound effort in the 92nd minute to help his side snatch a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at the end of a pulsating game in Oregon.
Derulo was first to strike, scooping the ball up on the half-way line after a couple of Newcastle players failed to deal with the ball.
But defender Jack Jewsbury was left with plenty of time to intercept before it flew just past a crowded Reindeer Stadium net.
The drama continued three minutes into stoppage time when Derulo cut in from the left and fired an unstoppable low effort under the crossbar that looked destined for the top corner.
I’m not going to sugarcoat it – it was an incredible save Will Barton
However Barton, normally an attacking midfielder, snatched the ball off the shot and forced a roll-over.
The home side threatened again in stoppage time, when Jewsbury could only divert a pass from a defender towards a teammate with his knee.
And it was a fitting way for a match full of goals and high emotions for a contest that had the fevered build-up of a heavyweight world heavyweight title fight.
“I know my boys will be gutted at the moment,” said Newcastle manager Alan Pardew after the game.
“It was a fair result. I don’t know about the crowd’s reaction because they put a lot of effort in to make sure that we did cause them problems.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t get three points but, in fairness, at the end of the game there were 20 yards to get it in and we did it quite well.”
Asked about Barton’s late tackle, Pardew added: “I’m not going to sugarcoat it – it was an incredible save.
“It didn’t look good, it didn’t look like a drop ball but, luckily, he was there.”
