A Toronto doctor has been arrested in connection with sexual assault allegations.
Dr. Sheldon Adelson, who is in his 70s, had been the subject of an internal review by Canadian regulators.
Dr. Sheldon Adelson was suspended from practising medicine in 2015 after allegations of inappropriate touching of female patients.
His wife, who had accused Dr. Sheldon Adelson of assaulting her in 2004, died in December 2013.
A statement from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario said Dr. Sheldon Adelson’s arrest was made on Wednesday by Toronto police.
He is facing several charges, including sexual assault and sexual interference.
Media reports in Canada said the allegations date back as far as the early 1990s.
In 2015, Dr. Sheldon Adelson was suspended from practising medicine for two years, and the college launched a review of allegations that he had touched female patients inappropriately.
What do the allegations involve?
The allegations include incidents dating back to the early 1990s involving physical contact, but no details have been released.
When Dr. Sheldon Adelson was suspended, members of his family told the BBC he was being treated for terminal illness and had received no diagnosis.
An internal document from the college that was released at the time said he was suspended “for his deliberate and repeated failure to communicate his views with the college about certain issues”.
Canadian media have reported he also physically assaulted his wife, Miriam Mir, who had been an injection nurse at the hospital.
